Sattriya Nritya or Sattriya Dance
Sattriya Dance or Sattriya Nritya is a traditional dance of Assam created in 15 th century by Vaishnav saint Srimanta Sankardeva. It is one of the eight major Classical dance of India. Now it has been recognized as a national dance OF India.
Earlier these dances were performed in the sattras ( Assam’s monasteries). This traditional dance was performed as a part of Ankiya Naat- a one act play developed by Sankardeva. As this dance grews and developed in the Sattras it was called Sattriya Nritya.
These Sattriya Nrityas are performed basically on Mythological stories . With the help of these dances the mythological stories were presented so that people could easily understand it in an immediate and enjoyable manner. Traditionally it was performed by Bhokots or male monks as a part of their daily rituals in monasteries but now it is performed by both male and female. The performing area also widens from monasteries to stages.
