Places to visit in Guwahati city of Assam

Assam is one of the seven sisters state of north east India. This beautiful valley is surrounded by Arunachal Predesh, Manipur, Meghalaya. Assam is famous for its tea in world map. Its magnificent landmarks comprise of hills, plains and valleys make it a perfect tourist destination for nature lovers.
Guwahati is a major city of Assam. All the important educational and economic institutions are situated in this city area. Cotton college, a renowned educational institute of North East India is located at the centre of Guwahati city. Again, the Guwahati University, Engineering college, Ayurvedic college is only a few kilometers from the city centre. Beside these educational foundations the place is also important in economic point of view. There are many market places like Fancy Bazaar, Panbazaar, Ganeshguri and Machkhow which are the commercial hub of the state.

Kamakhya Temple: It is one of the most famous temples in India. The temple is situated on the top of Nilaclal hill. It is a shakti temple which was constructed by the Koch king, Naranarayan. Every year thousands of devotees visit this temple. Ambubashi Mela is the main festival of the temple which is celebrated during the month of June.
Bhubaneshwari Temple:This temple is located near the Kamakhya Temple. From this temple one can see a panoramic view of Guwahati city.
Umananda Temple: This temple is located on an island amid the Brahmaputra River. Motor boats and public ferries are readily available from Panbazaar ghat to the temple. The temple id dedicated to lord Shiva and Mahashivaratri is the main festival of the temple.
Navagraha Temple: It is located in the eastern part of the city. It is a “temple of nine planets”, - a center of astrology and astronomy.
Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji Temple: It is located in Betkuchi area of Guwahati city. This recently built temple is one of the popular tourist attractions of the city.
Vashistha Ashram: This is an Ashram of sage Vashistha, situated at 12 kilometers away from the railway station. It is a very beautiful place where an interesting shrine, amid lots of greens and three lovely rivulets, Kanta, Lalita, and Sandhya.
There are many natural and artificial lakes such as Deepor Beel, Dighalipukhuri, Silpukhuri, and Nakkatapukhuri which provides the finest sightseeing options to the visitors.







Umananda Temple in Guwahati
Umananda Temple is one of the oldest temples in Assam situated at the heart of Brahamaputra River. This temple is located in the small island called Umananda Island in the mighty Brahmaputra River.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and his wife Parvati . According to Hindu mythology Lord Shiva created this place for his wife Uma or Parvati. Here Lord Shiva is known as Bhayananda. In kalika Purana it is explained that Lord Shiva burnt Kamdeva in this place with his third eye. For this reason it is also called as ‘Bhasmachal’.

The temple is consists of many beautiful crafting of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha and other Hindu Gods. It shows the mixture of both Vaishnavism and Shaivism. The outer part of the temple is also crafted with many Gods and Goddesses. Besides these wall sculptures you can see various sculptures on the rocks of the island scattered here and there which shows the outstanding architecture of Assamese Craftmen. Another attraction of this place is Golden Langur which is very rare in Assam.
Festival in Umananda Temple
Maha Shivaratri is the main festival celebrated every year in Umananda. On that day thousands of devotees offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Generally people visit this temple on Monday which is believed to be the holiest day.

The ideal time to visit the temple is from November to March.
How to Reach Umananda
Ferry service or Boat service is the only option to reach the temple. These services are available from Kachari Ghat and Panbazar Ghat.


Kamakhya Temple of Assam
Kamakhya Temple or Shakti peeth is one of the oldest temple in India. The temple is situated at the top at Nilachal hill which is 800 meters above sea level. It is one of the important pilgrimage destinations of Hindu. The main temple comprises of many temples or a whole set of temples like Tara devi, Bhubeneswari, Bagala etc, everyone with its own importance. The Goddesses of these temples are known to be the sisters of Kamakhya, so as equally worshiped by the devotees.
The legend behind the temple is related with lord Shiva and his wife Parvati. It is believed that when Shiva danced with the carcass of Sati her yoni fell down in this place and thus it is known as Shakti peeth. There are many other stories behind the formation of this temple which can be heard from the local people around the temple.
This temple plays a significant role in Hindu Religion. Every year people from all over India visit this temple, especially, during the month of June when the Maha Ambubashi Mela festival is being celebrated.

By Air: The nearest airport is Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport which is 20 kilometers from Guwahati.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway station which is 10 kilometers away from the temple.
By Bus: Bus service is available from all parts of the state.
